چکیده

Introduction: Non insulin dependent diabetes mellitus is the most common type of diabetes. Genetic factors, lipid profi les, hypertension are potential risk factors for diabetes mellitus. Adenosine binding cassette transporter proteins 1 (ABCA1) plays a role in cholesterol metabolism, especially high density lipoprotein (HDL-cholesterol). There are multiple mechanisms by which HDL-cholesterol can be atheroprotective, it is clear that the relative activity of ABCA1 plays a major role. We aimed to investigate association of ABCA1 C69T gene polymorphism with lipid levels in Turkish type 2 diabetic patients. Materials and methods: After isolation of DNA by ethanol precipitation we determined ABCA1 gene polymorphism by using polimerase chain reaction restriction fragment lenght polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method in 107 type 2 diabetic patients and 50 healthy controls. Results: We have observed that the frequency of TT genotype is signifi cantly higher in healthy controls compared to patients (14% vs. 3%; P = 0.008). Also frequency of T allele was higher in controls than in patients (34% vs. 21%; P = 0.020; OR (95% CI) = 0.52 (0.30-0.88)). There was no association of lipid levels and ABCA1 C69T polymorphism subgroups. Conclusion: We have found signifi cantly higher frequency of both T allele and genotype in control group when compared to patients that made us think that T allele may be a protective factor against diabetes mellitus. But, we could not fi nd a relationship between genotypes and lipid concentrations in our two groups. Larger studies will help us to understand the relationship between ABCA1 C69T genotype and lipid parameters in diabetes mellitus.

Interactions of Several Lipid-Related Gene Polymorphisms and Cigarette Smoking on Blood Pressure Levels

The interactions of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and cigarette smoking on blood pressure levels are limited. The present study was undertaken to detect nine lipid-related SNPs and their interactions with cigarette smoking on blood pressure levels. Genotyping of ATP-binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA-1) V825I, acyl-CoA:cholesterol acyltransferase-1 (ACAT-1) rs1044925, low density li...

Regulation of expression of abcA and its response to environmental conditions.

The ATP-dependent transporter gene abcA in Staphylococcus aureus confers resistance to hydrophobic β-lactams. In strain ISP794, abcA is regulated by the transcriptional regulators MgrA and NorG and shares a 420-nucleotide intercistronic region with the divergently transcribed pbp4 gene, which encodes the transpeptidase Pbp4. Exposure of exponentially growing cells to iron-limited media, oxidati...

Association Between Abnormal Course of Carotid Artery and Cerebrovascular Disease.

PURPOSE Abnormal course of the carotid artery (ABCA) is commonly identified during carotid sonography studies. Whether ABCA is related to the risk of stroke and stroke risk factors remains unclear. The purpose of the study is to investigate the prevalence of ABCA and the relationship with stroke and the risk factors of stroke. METHODS Color duplex ultrasound scanning of carotid arteries was p...

Multi-level Threshold Image Segmentation Based on PSNR using Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm

Image segmentation is still a crucial problem in image processing. It hasn yet been solved very well. In this study, we propose a novel multi-level thresholding image segmentation method based on PSNR using artificial bee colony algorithm (ABCA). PSNR is considered as an objective function of ABCA. The multi-level thresholds (t*1, t*2 ,...., t*n-1, t*n) are those maximizing the PSNR. We compare...

Several genetic polymorphisms interact with overweight/obesity to influence serum lipid levels

BACKGROUND Information about the interactions of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and overweight/obesity on serum lipid profiles is still scarce. The present study was undertaken to detect ten SNPs and their interactions with overweight/obesity on serum lipid levels. METHODS A total of 978 normal weight and 751 overweight/obese subjects of Bai Ku Yao were randomly selected from our prev...
